Desert Maiden

2008.04.16

This is a "new" statue on campus. It was created in 1940, and was given to the Sandia School in Albuquerque. But WWII broke out, the school was closed to be used by the government. That government program then moved down here, to Tech, and brought the statue with them. She was here for about 40 years, but was stolen in 1968 by someone and was reinstalled within a year. Then, in 1996, some Sandia Prep high schoolers stole her, and kept her on their school campus for several years. She returned here about five years ago, but was kept in storage, and has had some restorations done (multiple kidnappings, sledge hammer to the face, and misc vandalisms will do that to a statue). Anyway, she's just about finished being installed (including landscaping) and I thought I'd share the photos and her story with everyone. I like her a lot, and I walk by her just about every day on my way to class.

oldbabe What compels people to vandalize and try to destroy such beautiful things is beyond me! I like her a lot too. I like the color picture better too. What a nice campus you have!

coyoteself I kind of like that color version a lil bit more. I think the B&W needs a touch more contrast. Poor old girl's taken a beating over the years
